Understanding the Space Weather Data
Kp-Index (Geomagnetic Activity): Measures disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field on a scale from 0 to 9. For regular VHF/FM Sporadic E DXing, a lower number (0-3, Green) is generally better, indicating a stable magnetic field. High numbers (5+, Red) indicate a geomagnetic storm, which might degrade regular propagation but can open up for fantastic Aurora Scatter (Au) or extreme post-storm ES.
SFI (Solar Flux Index): A measure of overall solar activity and UV/EUV radiation. While critical for HF (Shortwave) F2 propagation, Sporadic E (VHF) relies more on meteor dust and wind shear (jet streams). However, a moderate to high SFI provides a good general baseline for atmospheric ionization.
X-Ray (Solar Flares): Sudden eruptions of energy on the Sun, measured from A (weakest) to X (strongest). While an M or X-class flare can cause a brief "Radio Blackout" (D-Layer absorption) for lower frequencies, it also acts as a massive charger for the E-layer! Experience shows that during and in the days immediately following a major M or X storm, the FM/VHF band can explode with extreme, intense Sporadic E (ES) clouds. If the badge turns red, keep a close watch on the bands in the following hours and days!
